The coat of arms of
Ayutthaya
shows a
sumwimaan
(fig.),,
i.e.
a kind of
prasat noi or small sanctuary,
underneath a tree and in the middle opening, a
waen fah
with a
sang, the
conch of victory. Legend has it that when King
U-Thong in 1347 wanted to
build a new city in the district of Nong Sohn, the workers dug up a pure
white conch. This was seen as a good omen and the king ordered a sanctuary
built to house the conch.
