  Chinese palm-leaf fans

China

A Chinese style palm-leaf fan similar to the Thai pad bai kapho (fig.), i.e. with an entirely woven structure (fig.). This one is embroidered with the colourful design of a Chinese dragon and a phoenix.

The fans shown below and on the right are similar to the Thai pad bai lahn (fig.), i.e. trimmed. All fans shown are from Xinhui in Guangdong Province, and are typically decorated by embroidery or drawings, which are painted by using a burned needle.

In China, palm-fans are known as bajiao shan, and are often exquisitely decorated with typical Chinese patterns and designs, and are for that reason frequently used as decorative items.
