  Chakri Throne Hall

Thailand

The Chakri Throne Hall is the largest of the palace buildings within the complex of the Grand Palace (fig.) in Bangkok, and was designed by the British architect John Chinitz and demonstrates a combination of both European and Thai style architecture.

The central mondop-like multi-tiered spire on the roof enshrines the ashes of each of the kings of the Chakri Dynasty, while the flanking spires house the ashes of princes who never inherited the throne. Whereas large bronze statues of elephants welcome at the entrance welcome visitors, soldiers of the ceremonial unit of the King's Own Guard provide the honour guards.
