Burmese novice nuns on alms begging round (fig.) in Amarapura. Whereas monks and male novices go out to beg for food on a daily basis and receive ready to eat meals, nuns in Myanmar only beg for food twice a week, and are given only uncooked rice, which they must prepare themselves at their nunneries.

Unlike in other Theravada Buddhist countries of Southeast Asia, where  monks and novices go on alms round only in the morning, Burmese clergy may beg for food throughout the day, including also in the afternoon.
