  White Horse Temple

China

According to tradition, the Zen Buddhist Temple of the White Horse, located in the vicinity of Luoyang (fig.), was established in 68 AD and is the first Buddhist temple in China.

It is named after the horses that brought two Indian Buddhist monks from Afghanistan to China along with Buddhist scriptures. The Chinese name of the temple, i.e. Bai Mah Si (白马寺), is on the miao minge attached above the entrance in traditional script, which reads from right to left (寺馬白).
