Agra Fort is a walled palace in northern India, in close vicinity of the Taj Mahal (fig.). It was the residence of several great moguls, most notably Shah Jahan, i.e. the legendary great mogul who commissioned the construction of the Taj Mahal.

At the end of his life he was imprisoned here by his own son, Aurangzeb and from the marble balcony of this octagonal tower, known as Musamman Burj and located nearby his private quarters, Shah Jahan had a panoramic view of the Taj Mahal, which he had built for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

According to legend, Shah Jahan died in this tower. The fort was constructed on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh, between 1565 and 1573 AD, using a workforce of some 4,000 builders commissioned by the third Mughal emperor Akbar.
