Cause: |
To commemorate the
500th
anniversary of Thai-Portuguese diplomatic relations,
considered the longest in Thailand's history. Although
Portugal only established its consular office in Bangkok in
1818 and Thailand did not open an embassy in Lisbon until
1981, overseas trade
missions, cooperation and trade transactions between the two countries
were already
established
as early as 1511, during
the reign of King
Ramathibodi II
of Ayutthaya. |

Two pairs of se-tenant stamps
illustrating the arrival of a Portuguese carrack at
Ayutthaya
and the
historic scene of contact between
Siam
and Portugal
500 years ago. In the top corners (left in the designs 1 and
3, right in the designs 2 and 4) is a
phum-shaped
logo that is made up of a golden
pagoda-like
tip over a Portuguese and Thai national flag, arranged
around a golden ship with three sails, and partly surrounded
at the bottom by a golden text in Thai that reads: "500 Years of
Thai-Portuguese Diplomatic Relations", a text that is
repeated in larger print in Thai and a similar text in
Portuguese, i.e. "500 Years of
Diplomatic Relations Thailand-Portugal", at the side of the
logo. In the middle of designs 1 and 2, along
the riverside, is
Pom Phet,
the Ayutthaya city fortifications
