  Pindola Bharadvaja (Ajita)

Thailand

Statue of the arahat Pindola Bharadvaja, the leader of the Eighteen Arahats, shown with long eyebrows. He is seated on a rock, somewhat leaning on his staff. His long eyebrows, indicate longevity and signifying seniority. According to legend he had been a monk in a previous life, who tried to gain Enlightenment, thus he hung on to life for so long that he finally grew long eyebrows.

However, in art Pindola is often switched with Ajita, another arahat who is shown with a deer. Thus if Ajita is with or on the deer, then Pindola has long eyebrows, and vice versa. In Vietnam, the two are called Toa Loc La Han (fig.) and Truong Mi La Han (fig.).
