Picture
of
Ranong's
Cradle Sculpture, that displays
three
quarry-workers mining for
tin
and from which the name Ranong derives,
i.e. ‘rae’ or mineral (tin) and ‘Nong’, the name of the city's first ruler Nai Nong.
In the background of the
sculpture is
Rattanarangsan Royal Hall, which was built by, and named
after,
Phraya
Rattana
Setthi, a local noble merchant who commissioned its
construction and presented it to King
Rama V
as an overnight pavilion when the king visited Ranong in
April 1890, followed by King
Rama VI
in 1909 and King
Rama VII
in 1928. In 2002, the
teakwood
palace was
dismantled and taken from it original place, i.e. Niwet Khiri
Mountain, later also referred to as Rattanarangsan Mountain,
and was rebuilt at its foothills. It now serves as the local
town hall and has a museum on the history of the former
palace. |
