Sa-la
is a palm with the botanical name Salacca zalacca and whose fruits of the
same name
have a reddish brown skin which has the appearance of a snake's skin, hence its
nickname ‘snake fruit’. The fruits are similar to those of the
Ra-kam Palm (Salacca
wallichiana), but more elongated and slender,
whereas Ra-kam fruits are shorter and more rounded (fig.).
