In Myanmar, the ritual of song nahm phra, i.e. pouring water on Buddha images, is a regular practice performed by visitors to the Shwedagon pagoda in Rangoon, rather than an event reserved only for the annual Songkraan water festival, as is more common in Thailand (fig.).

Customarily, devotees in Burma pour water on the image that corresponds to their day of birth. Hence, for this most temples will have eight images set up on one or more altars, most commonly in a circle or an octagon, often around a bodhi tree and in combination with the Burmese system of an animal-per-day (fig.).
