As a sacred flower and a symbol of enlightenment the lotus (fig.) is often depicted as a pedestal for Hindu gods as well as for the Buddha, both in murals and on statues (fig.). The pedestal shown here is in Lan Na style and dates from between the 15th and 17th century.
