ARCHITECTURE & ICONOGRAPHY

Cambodia

Normally, in the dhammachakka mudra, the Buddha forms a circle with the thumb and index finger (fig.), though sculptors not always strictly follow the iconographic rules and hence sometimes inconsistencies occur, as with this image at the Silver Pagoda in Phnom Penh, in which the index finger is stretched.

Yet, the chakka or chakra, i.e. the circular sign on his hand (fig.), suggests that this otherwise unfamiliar hand position does indeed represent a dhammachakka mudra, or —alternatively— a variety of an uttarabodhi mudra (fig.) as depicted in Myanmar (fig.).
