PREVIOUS LIZARD NEXT LIZARD India

A gecko, known in Thai as a jingjok, sitting on a wall. In order to hold on, these small lizards have feet that are covered with ‘setae’, that is to say microscopically tiny hair-like tubular that spread out as they place their feet.

This creates intermolecular attraction on smooth surfaces, though for rougher surfaces, these geckos also posses claws, enabling them to climb uneven structures like some kinds of tree bark and other rutted surfaces. Jingjok have the ability to detach their tail to avoid capture by predators (fig.) and this individual, spotted in Varanasi, had a clear scar where at some point its tail was severed, but –as is normal– it over time regenerated to its original shape.
