  blue bindi dot

India

Traditionally, the bindi consists of a vermilion dot that symbolizes a drop of blood, applied between the eyebrows or on the forehead of Hindu women, to indicate that they are married. Though nowadays, often prefab stickers are used that replace the original bindi dot and occasionally also other colours are used, that are regarded as more fashionable, sometimes only to fit the colour of the saree (fig.), the traditional dress for Indian women.
