The male Northern White-cheeked Gibbon can be distinguished from the Southern White-cheeked Gibbon by the white cheek-patches.

In the Northern White-cheeked Gibbon these reach to the upper borders of the ears and do not touch the corners of the mouth, rather than only half way to the ears and to the edges of the lips (fig.).
