A selection of horse-drawn carriages used
in the reigns of King
Chulalongkorn
and King
Vajiravudh, namely 1. a horse-drawn
so-called Four-wheeled Dog Cart without a
canopy; 2. a semi-hooded or convertible, Postillion-driven Landau Carriage;
3. a
C-spring Phaeton with a canopy; and 4. a fully hooded Glass State Coach, with
in the background
Phra Thihnang Anantasamahkom
Coronation Hall (fig.). They were used only by
kings
and high ranking members of the royal family, from the early
Rattanakosin
Period until the reigns of King
Prajadhipok
and King
Ananda Mahidol,
when their popularity started to decline due to the difficulty and high cost
of acquiring and maintaining draught horses, as well as the advent of the
automobile. |
