The
current
Rattanakosin Drum Tower,
in Thai known simply as
ho klong,
was built in 1982
AD, on the
occasion of the Bicentennial of the
Chakri
dynasty, and commissioned by the Cabinet under King
Rama IX.
It was
reconstructed in its
original location and after the design of the original
1782 AD tower commissioned by
King
Rama I,
yet no longer in wood covered with
din daeng
or red
clay but in stone. This replica houses three
used drums, larger than the original ones, from Wat Pracha
Sutharam, a temple in
Surin.
