  Pottery Hill

Pottery Hill is a minor elevation in Bagan that offers a panoramic view of the area and is a popular viewpoint, especially during sunset.

 

A former dumping place of earthen pottery from the Pagan Period that got damaged during the manufacturing process,  the hill is largely made up of shards of broken pottery, hence the name.

From this mound a number of ancient monuments can be seen, the most in line with the waning sun being monument nš 820, which dates from the early 11th century AD (fig.).

 

The most prominent, on the other hand, is the larger yet more remote 13th century AD Pya Tha Gyi Phaya (fig.).
