A male Plaintive Cuckoo perching on a tree branch in Ayutthaya. Adult males are greyish-brown above, with a grey head and orange underparts (fig.), while on the underside the tail is white with dark bars.

The legs and feet are yellow, the eyes dark reddish-brown, and the bill dark greyish-black, sometimes with a yellowish tinge, especially on the lower mandible.
