The adult male Pin-tailed Parrotfinch is about 16 centimeters tall, and green above, with a blue face and throat, and orangey-buff below, with some pinkish-red colouring in the middle of the belly.

It has a bright red lower rump that extends into the tail, which is also red. Its beak is black and the legs and feet are pinkish.
