RELIGION & MYTHOLOGY

  Phra Upakhut

Thailand

Phra Upakhut, a deity much worshipped in Myanmar, where he is known as Shin U Pagok (fig.), is here represented wearing a hat in the form of a giant lotus leaf, whilst the pedestal he is seated on has images of lotuses, fish, crabs, and shrimps, which refers to his role as guardian of the waters. Besides this, the base also has the depiction of a gold bag on it, suggestion that he is in Thailand also regarded as a kind of wealth god. Notice also the two water pots and the nagas on the structure in the back, objects and mythical animals related to water.
