Sanam Luang (Phra Meru field)
The Phra Meru field in front of the Royal Palace in Bangkok, is traditionally the place where members of the royal family are cremated.
This is the funeral pyre used for Princess Galyani Watthana (fig.), the sister of King Bhumipon.
In a special formal procedure, weeks before the actual cremation, a seven layered umbrella or chat was placed at the ceremonial grounds, by the King and Queen personally, as a symbol of her royal status.
