They were built by nine queens of King Maha
Dhamma Razadhippadi (r. 1733-1751 AD) as associate pagodas to the larger Lawka
Tharapu Pagoda and each of them
bears
the name of the donor queen.
Originally, their flat tops were crowned with either a nine or seven-tiered
chattra,
yet today
only six of the
nine pagodas remain.
