Kuan Yin,
the Chinese goddess of mercy.
As the female form of the
bodhisattva
Avalokitesvara
she also wears the image of
Amitabha
in her headdress (fig.).
The boy on her side is
Shan Cai,
a disabled boy who was given a new,
healthy and handsome body, by jumping of a cliff after the goddess, leaving
his disabled body in the ravine. Here, he is depicted walking on waves
across the sea, where −as described in the tale of the Precious Scrolls− he
went to see Kuan Yin when she appeared in the middle of the ocean.
