  Human Body Museum

Thailand

The Human Body Museum at the Faculty of Medicine of the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok exhibits several dissected human bodies, body parts and internal organs, as well as human skeletons.

It is used as a didactic exhibition to educate medical students, akin to the Congdon Anatomical Museum (fig.). The bodies and  body parts have been preserved by plastination, a technique which consists of replacing water, fluids and fat inside the body with resin and plastic, yielding specimens that retain most properties of the original sample, yet do not smell or decay.

The corpse is first preserved in formalin, then placed in a bath of acetone at freezing temperatures, which draws all the water out of the body, after which it is moved to a bath of liquid polymer, including silicon rubber, polyester and resin epoxy, and eventually the curable polymer is hardened through vulcanization, using gas, heat and UV light.
