A male and female Hog Deer feeding on elephant grass, in Saigon's Zoological and Botanical Gardens. In the wild, Hog Deer are mainly solitary, yet come together to mate around September-October.

They have short legs and when they run, hog deer hold their tail upright (fig.), showing the white underside, so that others can easily follow, especially in the dark.
