Vietnam

The 21 kilometer long Hai Van Pass is a coastal mountain road in central Vietnam that connects Hué with Da Nang.

It crosses a spur of the Annamite Mountain Range, which forms a major geographical barrier that divides the North from the South, both climatologically and in historical context.

The pass runs along the South China Sea and is renowned for its scenic beauty. Its name translates as Ocean Clouds and refers to the mists that often rise from the sea and hamper visibility.

It features bays with sandy beaches and at some point even forms a peninsula with an adjacent island. At the road's summit is a historical gate and fortress (fig.).
