  Great Cormorants in V-formation

PREVIOUS BIRD NEXT BIRD Nepal

When Great Cormorants fly in group, they typically adopt a V-shaped formation, such as this flock flying over Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal. For larger birds, flight in symmetric V-formation reduces drag which helps in conserving energy.

This is because the vortices generated by the wingtips of the bird in front create lift for the bird behind. See also List of Thai Animal Names.
