  Great Cormorants in V-formation

PREVIOUS BIRD NEXT BIRD Nepal

When Great Cormorants fly in group, they typically adopt a V-shaped formation, such as this flock flying over Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal.

For larger birds, flight in symmetric V-formation reduces drag which helps in conserving energy. This is because the vortices generated by the wingtips of the bird in front create lift for the bird behind.
