The escutcheon of
Khon Kaen shows the dead stump of a
tamarind tree, that miraculously came to life after a travelling group of monks
carrying a relic of the Buddha spent the night there. This was seen as a
nimit (good
omen) by the local population, who built a chedi at this very spot. The tree on
the right is said to be a
rachaphreuk, the tree that bears the provincial
flower.
