  Black-eared Kite

The Black-eared Kite is a subspecies of Black Kite (fig.). It is distinct from the nominate race by the tail, which is less forked than that of the first-named race and other subspecies, such as the Pariah Kite (fig.), as well as by more white on the underside of the primaries.

 

It also has a whiter face and throat, which contrast with the darker sides of the face, which led to it being named Black-eared Kite.

Below, it is streaked and rather pale, while the tail is light with brown bars. This particular bird was soaring over Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam (fig.).
