Banteay Srei is a temple built largely of red sandstone on a hill called Phnom
Dei and known for the sophistication of its elaborate and detailed carvings.
The temple's name means ‘Fortress of
Women’ or ‘Citadel of
Ladies’, and presumably refers to
its many decorative carvings of female deities, known as
devata.

In comparison to the other Angkorian
sites in the area, the edifices are rather small in
size, but this is largely made up for by the intricacy
of their decorations.
