  Bactrian Camels in iconography

China

Due to their important role in history as beasts of burden, not in the least on certain parts of the ancient Silk Road, Bactrian Camels (fig.) can sometimes be found portrayed in Chinese art and iconography.

In contrast to the Arabian Camel (fig.), which has only one hump on its back, the Bactrian Camel has two. These sculptures, one of a standing, the other of a resting animal, are found at Beijing's Spirit Way, near the Ming Dynasty Tombs.
