Formerly, each
Akha
village used to have its own spirit gate, and many still have today. It is built
to separate the
human world
from the world of the bush spirits and the gates are decorated with human
objects to scare away evil spirits.
Typically, besides
the human objects
there are also wooden carvings of naked or copulating humans,
reminiscent of those used by the Gia
Rai
in Vietnam
(fig.).
