Statue in Ho Chi Minh City of Thich Quang Duc, the former abbot of Phuoc Hoa Pagoda.

 

On 11 June 1963, he publicly burned himself to death (fig.), in protest of the violation of religious freedom and the discriminative policies against Buddhists by the then South Vietnamese regime.
